I am trying to figure this out as well and I realize that there are some sites with excellent Alexa ranking who only have 100 links... so it's not all about the links.

I wonder, how can a site with only a 100 back links have excellent Alexa ranking?

Mine has 50 now. It's a blog. www.fantasystockings.com

Now I have over 100 backlinks, but I don't see much improvement in my Alexa ranking.

There are many more things you need to consider in order to increase the Alexa ranking. I found this link on Google: http://www.wikihow.com/Improve-Your-Alexa-Rank-Quickly. Check it out. Hope it helps.

PageRank is an algorithm used by the Google search engine to measure the authority of a webpage. While the details of PageRank are proprietary, it is generally believed that the number and importance of inbound links to that page are a significant factor.

A value assigned to a web page as a measure of its popularity or importance, used to determine the order in which search engine results are presented.

Page Rank is given to a website with a number between 0 to 10; the higher the number the better for your website. Now realize, page rank is not everything in SEO, but it does give you an idea of what Google thinks of your website.
