I may have brought this up previously, however I would like to bring forth a fantastic idea that will improve my efficiency substantially and hopefully others too.

Workspaces:
When creating a new project in Rank Tracker, I always need to modify my workspace and remove the ones I don't wish to use. This can take up to 10 minutes. With clients being added almost every second day, this is taking a lot of time.

Search Engines:
In addition to the above, I need to also select which search engines I would like added. As we're in Australia and not USA, it takes a good 1-2 minutes to untick USA (twice), find Australia and untick the search engines within Australia that we don't report on.

If a tab within preferences was created to allow default settings when creating a new project or set them across all projects for future, it would bring the customisation of Rank Tracker one step further.

Thanks for the post Andrew. I understand this is an inconvenience, but unfortunately current software architecture does not allow making some project-side settings global and vice versa.

The closest you can do is copy workspaces between projects. Start a new project while an older one is still open, then go to Preferences -> Manage Workspaces, copy a workspace you need and then paste it in Preferences -> Manage Workspaces of your new project.

Thanks for your reply LinkAssistant.

I'm aware you most likely have a number of updates ready to roll out steadily across 2011, however if you can take into account the benefit of personalisation for users, I can only continue to recommend Rank Tracker for all our staff here in Brisbane.

Either way - keep up the fantastic work.

I am with Andrew on this issue. All it would take is to modify the standard project settings for NEW projects (no interaction between global and project settings).

Ditto!

I'm also in Australia and I find having to replicate the whole set-up process each and every time a major drag. It's especially frustrating because my settings are always the same and it bugs me that there's no way to create a "default" set-up.

Sometimes when I'm talking to a potential new client on the phone, I'll open RT while we're speaking so I can quickly check things and can speak with authority quoting live stats during the conversation but this can be difficult at best as I have to try and maintain my focus on the conversation and all the time I'm trying to also concentrate on "tweaking" the set-up just to check a couple of keywords.

Don't get me wrong, RT is a seriously good bit of kit but being able to customise and save the default configuration is a basic fundamental of any application and the lack of this ability in RT is an annoying omission and one I'd LOVE to see corrected.

I bought ranktracker a few weeks ago and am very happy with the way it functions, except for this issue which has been discussed already a year ago: making general settings for workspaces and projects. I just can't believe this simple and common sense aspect still hasn't been integrated in Ranktracker.

Maybe you can quickly make an .ini-file or something to solve it. The current situation is too silly.

Or did I miss something?

Any update on this functionality being added in the near future?

Unfortunately we can't give you any ETA, since updating this functionality turned out to be more difficult than we expected.

Making workspaces customizable implies rebuild of our current software architecture, so it's quite a daunting task, and we can't say when it will be implemented.

As a solution, you can copy workspaces between projects. Please start a new project while an older one is still open, then go to Preferences -> Manage Workspaces, copy a workspace you need (click Copy button) and then paste it in Preferences -> Manage Workspaces of your new project.

:)

I tried to do this in Rank Tracker but unfortunately it won't let me change the URL (it's greyed out). I need to run the same project across a .com and a .ca version of the same site.

Any solutions to this?
