I've been designing sites for a while, and get the basic jist of link building, but have never looked at doing it as part of SEO.

If anyone could help out with a quick basic question to help me get my head around it, that would be much appreciated.

Basically, and this may be a dumb question, but with links created, should links exist on a public facing page where site visitors can click through to sites? Or is there some behind the scenes thing going on with links going on pages not visible, and exist purely for the benefit of search engines?

I ask because I ran a report looking for sites based on a competing site. LinkAssistant found a good few sites a direct competitor had linking to it. But when I clicked on the backlink page, I didn't see a traditional links page, and am struggling to find any reference to the site that supposedly has a backlink.

Hope that makes sense - any pointers to help get me going with this would be great.

Thanks.

Well, those could be not directory links, but ad, banners, comments - all kinds of links. Not necessarily reciprocal.

As for the link directory being visible - the general rulis that it's better to have a link to the directory on your home page - somewhere below, for instance, if you don't want it t be too visible. Having the link directory pages not interlinked with the rest of the site's pages is not advised.

OK, thanks. I think I missed that LA was returning pages where the links were no longer present - so that threw me.

The site I'm looking at actually does pretty well in Bing and Yahoo for its most obvious search term (digital photo frames) - making it to the first page.

The problem is Google, where its more like page 5-7.

Looking at its main competitor on Google, which is what we're looking to improve.

It however returns literally hundreds of errors in W3 validator. And having looked at both in Website Auditor, its no better than our site.

So I'm guessing that backlinks is the main area to be improved.
