Hi All,

Let me begin by saying that I have tried every piece of software out there and Link Assistant is by far the best one for our needs. I also like the way support actually try and help, although sometimes it takes too long to get a response. I have to admit that once you get your head round the way the software works, it is quite powerful indeed.
However, I have come across a major flaw that might have messes up a large harvest/request campaign I have just carried out. Here is what I have done:

I have created a good looking website/directory full of information and news relating to my site. I created the directory structure with the correct categories + a miscellaneous category.
I then harvested every relevant URL from another relevant directory – Ended up with just over 1000 potential partners. These are all from different categories. It would have taken far too long to separate them so I temporarily assigned them all to the miscellaneous category. I then generated the directory.

The software correctly created 30 links per page for that category and named them like this:

Index-misc-2.html
Index-misc-3.html
.
.
.
Index-misc-38.html

38 pages in total.

I then send everyone of those people a well thought out email telling them what page they are on (let say in this case index-misc-34.html) and for them to email me back what category they want to be in.
Out of the 1080 odd emails I sent out, about 350 were undeliverable so I immediately remove these from the directory (its excellent feature, by the way, that you can remove the partners from the FAILED emails by right clicking on a group of failed emails and selecting remove link partners!!! Well done.)

This is where the problem lies. Now that they are removed, the links I sent out to tell people where their links are situated are no longer valid as now the miscellaneous category only has 33 pages and not 38. (so an email i sent to mr smith to tell him that his link is on index-misc-35.html is now actually on index-misc-33.html) People are emailing me to let me know they cannot find their link on the page.

I know it’s a difficult one to solve but I think that when you remove links, it should keep all the existing links in the correct pages and only remove pages if you tick the “compact pages” dialog box or similar. So if for example, I remove 3 links from one page the originally had 30, it should now have 27 and not enforce the 30/page rule. Does that make sense?

Thanks a lot for reporting this!

You could re-generate the directory so the new one overwrites the older one and send follow-up e-mails to your remained partners...

Or, you could wait with removing the non-responsive ones until all the rest verify their links, and then remove the non-responsive partners, updating all the rest via follow-up e-mails (that would be less 'spammy' I guess).

yep, not such a big deal for now, i just make sure i dont remove them from the link directory until the timeframe has passed. It does mean i have lots of links in the directory that i know wont ever get reply positivly.

Is this something you are looking into implementing in the future though?
