In Google blog search you can see articles that were posted just a few minutes ago, begin to show up very predictably shortly thereafter.

If you want to see what you see in Google Blog Search from a browser, please select the "Google Blog Search" search engine when running a search in SEO SpyGlass.
You also need to uncheck the "Exclude duplicates" option in your advanced search settings.

Lastly, what source does this report get its' information from?

All our SEO tools obtain data directly from the search engine you've chosen. If your project settings don't conflict with those of your browser, the information you'll get will be identical.

It can't be directly from the sites where the links come from because what I'm seeing in the report is some very old information such as old anchor text that was changed long ago which has never changed with more recent reports?

The links you get do come from search engines (the "link:domain" operator). In fact, they look just the same as a crawler from a search engine saw them last time. Once the links are gathered, SEO SpyGlass visits all the pages listed to verify if these data are up-to-date.
