How does one go about performing basic keyword research (number of monthly searches for each keyword/keyword phrase) without bothering to enter a potential competitors website?

Secondly, there must be a way to restrict the number of competitors found to registering only for "exact phrase" matches?

There are so many super cool features I've messed around with since downloading the demo software that I must be missing something obvious?

You can do that in Rank Tracker, starting your project for your site or any other URL.



What tool exactly are you talking about? If you mean Rank Tracker then please take a look at the competition settings in Preferences -> KEI settings -> Competition. You can narrow down the number of competing pages found there.

I apologize for not being 100% clear. Let's say I've yet to pick a domain name because I'm researching what keywords I wish to use in order to choose an appropriate domain name? In other words, keyword research before having a domain chosen. Is this possible?

It does not really matter what site you start a project for, the keyword research part of Rank Tracker is not affected by that. So what I said above still applies to your situation - start a project in Rank Tracker and add/suggest keywords you are interested in and analyze them using the Preferences -> KEI settings module.
