I know this is a stupid question, but there must be a fast answer. :)

I have scanned my competitor's website with SEO SpyGlass, see a pile of links, now what do I do next?

I'd like to know what links give my competitor the most traffic, how I do this?

There is no fast answer. If it was that easy we would all be doing it.

You try to get links to your site from the same locations, and the way to do that depends on what kind of site that is - be it a forum post, a blog article a directory article or a banner ad.

As said above, there is no fast answer to that, but you could try comparing Alexa ranks of the backlink locations - Alexa rank deals with traffic and can be related to that.

I know that Alexa, in principle, can provide information about traffic. But my experience is that it tends not to be at all accurate - in fact probably very misleading even. Analyse your own website and I suspect it will give you results you would not recognise.

I agree with driansmith. In my experience, Alexa ratings shown in SpyGlass seems to be contrary to reality -- the websites I know for sure are the most popular show the lowest Alexa ratings in SpyGlass, and the top-ranked Alexa links in are obvious trash. Is it Alexa or SpyGlass? Hmm... Just checked the alexa.com, I see totally different figures. What is the problem?

Coming from you that is indeed high praise. Yes, SEO is one highly competitive term but then nothing like a good challenge to spice up life. :)

...you can get more traffic info from Compete ( http://www.compete.com/ ) by the way - please see it in Preferences -> Preferred ranking factors. So that's another way to analyze link weight.
