Hi guys,

When RT searches google there are some circumstances Google might "feel" like the searches are automated and challenges you with a CAPTCHA request.

I don't think it's that much a matter of feeling. Some captchas are random. They can appear if you search for
just one term through your browser. Not a hint of automated activity, but the captcha is there!
At most times, however, captchas appear whenever there is a
string of search requests from the same computer or proxy server. Since proxy servers are often shared by multiple users, you can't always tell whose computer this trouble-making string originates from.

RT is not noticing the captcha challenge and is instead returning as if no rankings were found.

Let me disagree with you here. The reason you don't see captchas when the proxy rotation feature is working is that Rank Tracker
doesn't show them to you. The tool simply takes another proxy and re-checks the keyword through it. This is done intentionally to spare you the work of typing in captchas.

If the result for a keyword with a rank is "Not in top 100", it can mean there is a data center offering outdated info for the keyword. Please try disabling the feature (it's under
Preferences -> Search Safety Settings) and re-check the keyword to find out if it might be the case.
Also please look at the date the keyword was checked last time. There's a chance that the latest check failed due to a temporary block and you are seeing the result of an older check.

To get around the bug you can update KEI (without API credentials) for a single keyword (which does notice the captcha challenge) and that will get your cookie flagged as human so you can continue.

Don't see any connection between checking keyword rankings in Google and updating KEI. I'm really glad the solution helped you and our friend
itarget but cannot promise the same positive effect to others.
