you can install some really nice plugins like platinum SEO, 1 click install and with every post you can set the keywords, title, meta description. Also you can change that for the main page etc.
Some other things you might try it to use things like pretty link for affiliate links etc. you can set the url's to seo optimized url's.
And don't forget to add the analytics code to your blog so you can see if your content works (bouncerate).

I have a work with a number of WordPress blogs and I would All in One SEO, its easy to install and easy to configure and offers all the functionality that you would require... Plus if you have any problems setting it up there are videos on youtube!

Considering that most people on this forum are either SEO experts or future to be experts, I really advice to use the Wordpress SEO plugin created by Joost de Valk (Netherlands). Go to Plugins and search for "WordPress SEO by Yoast".
It is not meant for beginners, then I would just use "All in one SEO". Yoast is meant for SEO-ers that really know what they are doing. You can configure your XML sitemap, exclude segments of your website from Google, insert the codes for webmaster tools (Yahoo, Google, Bing), insert default text to be added at front or end of the Page Title. Even if you know what you are doing, it will still take about an hour to completely configure the plugin.
Am I a fan? Yes. Using it for several websites and it works better for me than All in one SEO or other plugins. But again, only if you really know what you are (SEO-)doing.

When I use All in one SEO, I get the warning that my site has a double meta description When I try to optimize using Platinum SEO pack, I can change the title as much as I want, my domain is always added This way, Google thinks I'm spamming or my optimization % is very low
